This morning, I was able to take my 6-year-old son, Judah, to breakfast. He wanted to go to McDonald’s, so we got breakfast and sat down. He was telling me about the playground equipment and how to do the vampire slide (that’s where just before you slide down, you lay all the way back with your arms folded over your chest as a vampire in a coffin might do). He said he would show me so I really believed him. I told him I believed him and that I believe in him.
I asked if he knew what that meant… that I believed in him. He didn’t really know. I tried explaining by saying that I believed he could do anything he wanted. He said, “I can’t do anything I want, ” meaning the rules he’s not supposed to break, etc. I said, “no, I mean I believe you could be an artist, musician, doctor, fireman, or whatever you want to do… I believe in you.” He jump up from the booth and took a crouched pose and exclaimed “I can be a pirate! Ethan is going to be a pirate too!” I said, “I believe you’d be a great pirate if that’s what you want to do. I believe in you!”
I’m not sure if he still really got the fact that I believe in him, but now I know he wants to be a pirate and he knows I support him in his endeavors. Isn’t that like God? He believes in us and tries to get that message across to us in the simplest ways. Then, we jump up and tell Him what we want to do or who we want to be. Perhaps He’s amused or saddened a little, but still loves us and is for us.
I’m going to keep telling Judah I believe in him and as he grows and matures, that message will sink in a little further and continue to have more meaning. I want him to know I believe in him and that more importantly, God believes in him. God loves us so much. We really can do anything in Him… even be a pirate.
